Skin Care in Ayurveda
Skin reveals ones inner health. It sense the touch, pain, temperature, pressure etc.one should give extra care to skin otherwise it will suffer pre mature agening, become dull, blemish and dry, cause pimples, acne, etc. Ayurveda provides natural ways to maintain healthy and glowing skin, so that we can stay beautiful and charming for long.
The internal processes like digestion, excretion etc will affect the beauty of the skin. Ayurveda says the digestion is carried out by fire in the digestive system. This transforms food substances, eliminates toxins and wastes, maintains body temperature and maintains strong immunity. When food not digested completely, it will fail to nourish the body components and reduce body resistance. Then toxins start to accumulate in the body. This will affect the skin and it loses its lusture, glow, acne and pimples start to appear, and skins start to wrinkle at an early stage.
Tips For Healthy Skin
- Eat freshly prepared fresh, whole organic food, leafy vegetables
- Include sweet juicy fruits like grapes, water melon, pars in break fast, whichg is good for all skin types
- Have easy to digest proteins like paneer, whole milk, lasee etc.
- Use oils like ghee and extra virgin olive oils in the diet as they nourish and lubricate skin
- Avoid microwaving and boiling of vegetables as t eliminates antioxidants
- Regular consumption of honey, milk and yoghurt nourishes the skin and prevent pre mature aging
- Self massage should be done daily. Depending on your type of skin, different ingredients should be used for the massage
- Detoxification is considered essential and should be done both externally and internally
Pastes of Cucumber, Sandalwood, Papaya and Pineapple Fruit are used for making face masks. Honey acts as a powerful moisturizer. Turmeric paste is another popular skin care herb, applied both as a face pack as well as all over the body, to improve the skin tone and prevent skin disorders.
A mixture of Lemon Juice and Honey is used in skin care. A paste of 'Raktha Chandanam' (red sandalwood) in Honey, applied once or twice a day for about a fortnight, has a magical effect in erasing scars.
Apart from this Ayurveda provides medicated herbal facial masks, herbal oils ets for complexion, fairness, and also for body slimming.

Different Types Of Skin And Its Care
Oily Skin:
This is due to the hormone imbalances in adolescence. Oily skin is common in teenagers.The oil secretion in skin increases during teen age and decreases as age advances. Hormonal imbalance may appear during pregnancy and menopause, which lead to increase secretion of oil. Contraceptive pills and cosmetics also tend to increase the oil secretion. Humidity and Hot weather naturally increase oil secretion from oil glands of skin. The oil producing glands of skin is overactive and produces more oil. The excess oil, which oozes out gives the skin a greasy shine and the enlarged pores make the skin look coarse.
What ayurveda says about oily skin:
When Kapha dosha is dominant the skin will be oily, shiny and soft. The skin will have a glowing complexion. Wrinkles develop much later in life. When Kapha dosha gets imbalanced in body and skin, pores get enlarged and acne,pimples start appearing.
The problems due to Oily skin:
- Enlarged pores
- Black heads
- Acne and pimples
- More Oily
- Dark skin due to excess oil
- More prone to moist eczema
- Fungal infections are common
Tips from Ayurveda
- Wash the skin with plenty of warm water 2-3 times to avoid clogging of pores
- Avoid chemical mixed soap to remove oil
- Avoid too much washing of skin kin as it overproduction of oil to compensate the loss
- Use hot water to wash face as it dissolves clogged oil and also balances Kapha
- Use a moisturizer free of oil
- Avoid sticky make up, which clogs the pores
- Avoid heavy, fried fatty food, cheese and sugar rich deserts
- Consume light, well-spiced food as they balance kapha
- Avoid constipating foods
- Take plenty of leafy green vegetables and fresh fruits
- Avoid excessive consumption of soft drinks, alcohol, tea, coffee and chocolates
Dry Skin:
As we grow old, the skin loses its capacity to retain moisture. The extreme climatic conditions to which we get exposed, as we grow old worsen the condition and skin becomes more dry.
What Ayurveda says about Dry skin
The skin will be dry, due to VAATAH DOSHA. Skin becomes rough, scaly and wrinkled and thin, delicate and cold to touch.
The problems due to dry skin:
- Dry and rough skin
- Development of wrinkles at an early age
- Scaly and cracked skin
- Aged looks
- Dull and lifeless appearance
- More prone to fungal infection and dry eczema
Ayurveda tips for dry skin condition
- Avoid further drying of skin
- Avoid dry and fried food
- Always consume fresh warm food with little fat like ghee or olive oil
- Include sour and salty food in diet
- Sweet juicy fruits are recommended
- Drink 7-9 glasses of warm water everyday. (Do not drink cold water as
it increases vata)
