Hair Care In Ayurveda
Hair is a protein dominant substance that grows out from the hair follicle, which is embedded in the dermis, the deep skin. Though hair is a dead structure, the hair follicle is supplied with the blood to get nourishment and to satisfy the demands of the cells present there.
Like any other problems, hair problems are also due to the imbalance of tridoshas, but pita dosha is the most important factor.

- Wash your hairs regularly
- Gently massage your scalp once a week
- Oil hairs twice a week
- Give stream bath to your hairs once in every 15 days
- Brushing your hair regularly to stimulate the scalp, makes the hair glossy and healthy
- Take at least eight hours continues sleep
- Drink lots water
- Include lots of green leafy vegetables and sweet juicy fruits
- Protect your hairs from direct exposure to sunlight

- Extreme cold and hot environmental exposure to your hairs
- Using comb and towels of other people
- Combing wet hair
- Having greasy, salty and spicy food
- Chemical based shampoos, gels and colors
- Having food with artificial preservatives and chemical additives
- Stress can be seriously injurious to long-term health and color of hair
Ayurvedic Treatments For Hair Problems
'Thaali' is a traditional shampoo. It can be any herb, usually the soapy paste of crushed 'Cheevakkai' (Shikakai) powder, made into a paste and rubbed into the hair during the bath. For thaali we can also use shoe flower with its leaves and buds.
Plain boiled rice soup rubbed into the scalp for ten minutes prior to the bath is an excellent cure for dandruff. 'Moong' (green gram) is a good hair and body scrub. 'Mylanchi' (henna or Egyptian privet) is widely used as a hair dye and also for the treatment of dandruff.
Massage the scalp with a Mixture of a spoon of camphor to half a cup of coconut oil or neem oil, before going to bed. The continuous usage will make the scalp healthy.
Adding 'Amla' (dried and powdered Gooseberry) and beating in an Egg Yolk makes the dye fast. A mixture of Coconut Milk and Lemon Juice can prevent hair loss.
Yoghurt, eggs and Lemon Juice rubbed into the scalp is said to accelerate hair growth, while Cucumber has excellent astringent properties.
Coconut is the most prestigious herbs that helps in promoting re-growth of the hairs. It helps in repairing the hair roots and reverses any damage that has caused the problem. The home made coconut oil made from coconut milk is good for hair growth and hair problems and also fro many skin problems. Regular usage of coconut oil makes hair healthy.
Boiled coconut oil with local ayurvedic herb called Kayyonni is good for hair growth. Instead of Kayyoni we can use Henna, Aloe Vera or mixture of these for better results.
